Announcing the NYIOP Auditions
Bringing the world of opera to New York City to hear you!
The New York International Opera Auditions, or the NYIOPs, were born out of the frustration facing American singers in their desire to audition for European and International opera houses. The concept behind the NYIOPs reverses the traditional understanding of international opera auditions: The opera companies travel to hear the singers.
This allows a singer the opportunity to be heard by numerous houses in one audition, also dramatically cutting the high costs traditionally associated with an "audition tour." Thanks to NYIOP, the international opera market is finally open to singers from all over the world, all it takes is one audition, right here in the heart of New York City!
See http://www.nyiop.com/ for further information and application procedures

Music Internship Opportunities at Lighthouse International
The Filomen M. D’Agostino Greenberg Music School, located at Lighthouse International in New York City’s east midtown area, is pleased to announce two unpaid semester-long internships beginning in fall 2012.
Background
With 130 students ranging in age from five to 95, the Filomen M. D’Agostino Greenberg Music School at Lighthouse International is dedicated to helping people pursue their interest in, and study of, music while addressing the challenges posed by vision loss. Students include children and young people enrolled in public and private schools, professional and non-professional musicians – and anyone interested in enrichment through lifelong musical learning.
Founded in 1913, our Music School is dedicated to artistic and educational excellence, garnering high regard among music schools in the New York area. Today, it stands proudly as the only community music school in the country for people who are visually impaired. We also serve as a resource to music educators and performers nationwide as the leading provider of accessible music instruction.
The Opportunities
The Music School of Lighthouse International is offering two unpaid internship opportunities for college music students who have interest in gaining hands-on experience working with students who are visually impaired, and with the materials associated with serving them. Participating interns will ideally be those entering the profession of general music education, choral conducting, music performance, and/or music industry.

The music education/choral conducting intern will gain hands-on experience in learning rehearsal and performance techniques related to making music with visually- impaired musicians in a group setting. S/he will learn concurrently about preparation of alternate formats of music; i.e. large print, Braille, and audio as music preparation is a significant component of working with musicians impacted by vision loss.
Prerequisites:
· -music education or performance major in general music/choral conducting
· - a working knowledge of a standard music notation program such as Finale.
Timeframe: Fall 2012 (September through December)
Hours: Two days per week (100 hours/semester). Classes typically meet:
Wednesday (approx.. 4:00 – 7:30pm) and
Saturdays (approx.. 12:00noon-3:00pm)
2. Music Technology Intern.
The intern will work with the technological resources available at the Music School at Lighthouse relating to the creation of large-print and braille notation and development of technological resources. The intern will work under the supervision of Lighthouse’s music faculty and administration and assist with duties directly related to our assistive music technology center and to operations of our unique, accessible library of more than 25,000 music scores in braille, large-print and standard notation.
Prerequisites:
· -Good computer skills, a working knowledge of music notation programs such as Finale/Sibelius.
basic musicianship
· -highly motivated, detail-oriented learner, and comfortable within a professional office and music school environment.
· -interest in learning about the materials and technologies available for use by students who are visually impaired.
Please note that this internship is not designed nor intended as a course in reading braille music or learning computer programs per se, but rather in learning about and working with the materials and technologies that are applicable to students with vision loss.
Timeframe: Fall 2012 (September through December)
Hours: Two days per week; 3 hours per day (100 hours/semester)
Days and times to be arranged.
