This quadrennial competition, named after the great American pianist William Kapell, is a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions and has taken its place among the most prestigious competitions in the world. First produced in 1970 as the University of Maryland International Piano Festival & Competition, the Kapell Competition was renamed in 1986 and was placed under the auspices of the new Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center in 2003.

The 2007 competition attracted more than 200 applicants from around the world and the 33 pianists selected to compete included rising young stars from 32 countries around the world. Russian pianist Sofya Gulyak took first prize, and has subsequently won the Isang Yun Competition (2008) and the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition (2009).
Guidelines for the 2012 competition are available here; application forms are now available.
