Cantorial Soloist - Baritone
The Barnert Temple in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey (20 miles from the George Washington Bridge) is looking for a cantorial soloist for the period of September 2011 through June 2012. The soloist would be the baritone in a SATB quartet for the High Holidays and would also sing a number of the solos. After the holidays the soloist would join the clergy in facilitating and leading the music twice a month at the Friday night services (the second and fourth Fridays). The ideal candidate would have knowledge of Reform Jewish worship and a familiarity with the core repertoire, but the right candidate could acquire this knowledge in preparation if the fit is right. The soloist should be an excellent, classically trained singer able to sing the dramatic repertoire associated with the high Holidays but also able to sing a more folk influenced repertoire during the year. There could be other singing opportunities at services during the year, depending on the soloist's availability. Regular rehearsals with the temple accompanist and meetings by phone or in person with the Rabbi would be expected, but will be arranged at the parties' mutual convenience. The ability to play the guitar would be a plus but is not required.
Service dates available on request; there is some flexibility possible depending on candidate's prior commitments. However, availability at the High Holidays is required:
Rosh Hashana evening - Wednesday, September 28
Rosh Hashana morning - Thursday, September 29
Yom Kippur evening - Friday, October 7
Yom Kippur morning - Saturday, October 8
There will be one rehearsal with the solo quartet, time TBD and four rehearsals with the volunteer choir, all on Wednesday evening: 9/7, 9/14, 9/21 and 10/5.
Salary is negotiable depending on availability.
Please send resume and inquiries to Janet Montroy at music@barnerttemple.org
