The 49th edition of the contest, which takes place this year, is open to female singers from 18 to 32 years of age and male singers from 20 to 35 (participants must have reached the specified ages in 2010).
This contest was created in memory of the famous tenor Francesc Viñas, considered the foremost Spanish exponent of Wagnerian opera. Viñas sang in the finest opera houses in Europe and the Americas. Especially noteworthy were his participation in the Spanish premiere of Parsifal in 1913 (at the Liceu), and El arte del canto, a book of great educational value, firmly based on his experience as a singer, which he published in 1932.
